Take the ground wire from the sender unit. the gauge should sweep over the full indication. ground the ground wire to a known good ground and it should sweep to empty. if this happens it already gives a indication the wiring & gauge/flex circuit are ok. Nick. The main fuse panel has no ground wires that I know of only hot wires there that's why it's fused. Check your main grounding points. 1.battery to frame (left rear) 2.frame to engine (rt front) 3 ground wire to radio. 4 go to a good radio installer & try a supressor kit, it could be the alt.
